US President Donald Trump said Sunday that he expects to make a swift decision on how to proceed with Iran, following what both sides described as “positive” and “constructive” nuclear talks held over the weekend in Oman.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said he had met with his advisers regarding the negotiations and anticipated action soon. “We’ll be making a decision on Iran very quickly,” he stated, offering no further details.
The discussions in Muscat on Saturday marked the first time the Islamic Republic and a Trump administration held official talks, including during his 2017–2021 term. While the meetings were indirect—mediated by Omani officials—both Tehran and Washington signaled cautious optimism, despite lingering tensions and major disagreements over the scope of any potential deal.
Sources cited by Axios reported that a second round of talks is scheduled to take place next Saturday in Rome, where both delegations are expected to build on the initial framework discussed in Oman.
On Saturday, Trump downplayed expectations but acknowledged progress. “Nothing matters until you get it done, so I don’t like talking about it, but it’s going okay,” he said. “The Iran situation is going pretty good, I think.”
Trump has previously threatened military action if Tehran does not halt its expanding uranium enrichment program, which Western powers say is approaching weapons-grade levels. Iran maintains that its nuclear activities are strictly for civilian purposes.
